SMBv1 broke with 3.2.0 ? (iOS)

Postby Enver » 19 Sep 2019 16:11

SMBv1 is no longer working for me. Was working fine with 3.1.9. Given how it's not in the patch notes specifically I guess its a bug ?
iOS 12.4.1, SMB device is an apple time machine.

No longer working as-in: when I hit the connect button it tries to connect for a second and then goes back to the 'Network' tab.

Hello,

Thank you for the reports.

We identified an issue with SMB1/2 and this should be fixed with the next release.

On my iPad Air 2, my VLC no longer finds my shared folders on my home network that have video files. This worked before. The rest of my home network is PCs.
For example, on my Win 7 Pro 64-bit PC, I have a folder called "Vids" and it is fully Shared to Everyone.
Before, on VLC on my iPad, I could access it.
Now, I cannot.
Is this the same problem described in this thread?

Hello,

I did create a sharing folder on my Windows 10 PC recently; just for a quick test for VLC for iOS v3.2.0 connectivity. It's not a comprehensive test, but at least, the app connected to Windows 10 PC samba service successfully.
If you don't have need for SMBv1 protocol, disable it, and enable SMBv2 protocol on your Win 7 Pro 64-bit PC. Good luck.

Alden - I think I have SMB2 already activated on both my Win 7 Pro 64-bit and my Win 10 Pro version 1903.
But how can I confirm what is activated and not?
Then, how did you connect? In VLC on your iPad, did you specify the user name, port etc. which I never did before, or just highlight the PC name and hit "connect" the way I used to?
Thanks.

glnz,

Yea, SMB 2.1 was introduced with Windows 7, my bad.
I have a folder sharing set up with an user account with password. User account and password are the only values I use with VLC for iOS to connect. A quick fix using Windows 10 as samba server for me, till the next release of the app.

How to detect status, enable, and disable SMB protocols on the SMB Server

For Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008

Registry Editor

To enable or disable SMBv1 on the SMB server, configure the following registry key:
Registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters
Registry entry: SMB1
REG_DWORD: 0 = Disabled
REG_DWORD: 1 = Enabled
Default: 1 = Enabled (No registry key is created)

To enable or disable SMBv2 on the SMB server, configure the following registry key:

Registry entry: SMB2
REG_DWORD: 0 = Disabled
REG_DWORD: 1 = Enabled
Default: 1 = Enabled (No registry key is created)

Note You must restart the computer after you make these changes.

Alden - Thanks for info, but my home Win 7 machine doesn't require User Name or Password when I boot up, and so I have nothing to enter into VideoLan's Network SMB connection to make it work. VideoLan just doesn't work any more.
I found a different app for iOS called "Documents", and it is working. It prompts me for User Name and Password on my 7 machine but will accept blank entries and get me to my PC's Vids file and then play what I select on its own viewer.
There are so many complaints about this new version of VideoLan for iOS that it's as if VLC was taken over by Microsoft. Shame.

3.2.1 is live, however it does not resolve the issue for me.

Just updated to 3.2.1 AND tried.
Prompts me for User Name and Password (which I skipped before) and then connects only very slowly - needs minutes.
I don't have a password on either side of my dual-booting Win 7 + Win 10 machine. In VLC now, I type in the User Name, leave the Password blank, and it' gives me a spinning circle for a long time. Also, the prompt does not go away - I have to hit Cancel. After a few minutes, it shows the Shared folders on my PC.
Connecting finally, but this is much worse than before. There is no improvement in 3.2 over 3.1 - it's definitely worse, and I would gladly go back to 3.1.
Hey - VLC - you're not done here.
