SERVER CONNECTION FAILED using FTP to remote host

Hi
Using iOS 1.12.4 and VLC 3.1.9.
I have my ASUS router configured to allow FTP remotely using the name.assuscomm.com DDNS.
I can fully browse this repo using normal ftp.
However, when I use VLC, I am able to get about 3 levels into the directory structure then I get the SERVER CONNECTION ERROR. I can go lower levels on other sub dirs. In some cases I can get to the bottom. Other cases I get this error. In one case, I get that error trying to enter a directory with about 6-7 sub dirs but there are many 100s of files below that level.
Even if I get this error, I can back up and navigate to other areas successfully. Seems like there might be an issue I. The ftp component of VLC that is choking on the number of files below ( not sure if it is trying to preload sub dirs to reduce latency or not).
