Why does the VLC cache eat up so much space?

I prefer to have videos saved within the app rather than stream it. Say I have 10gb space left on my phone and I put a video which is 3gb in the app. When I delete the video I don’t have 10gb left anymore, I have 8gb...its as if VLC doesn’t completely remove the video file, but keeps it in a hidden folder.
Can anyone help me?

There's thumbnail caching but I don't think it would eat up 2gb. Can you check if it's really VLC's cache that is 2gb ?

I had several movies stored in the app that were altogether around 7.5gb. I deleted most of them, yet when I check my iPhone’s storage it still says VLC is taking up 7.5gb this is still the case when I check it several days later too.

I know this is old and you may or may not have solved this, but I took a note from this thread:
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?t=130379
and what I did was turn on Sharing via wifi, then I turned it back off,
then I double clicked and force closed the app and re-launched it
I went back to iOS storage, and VLC went from 8gb used back to 2.3gb used (which seems appropriate for exactly what I know IS in my VLC media library)
