the current version of VLC for Apple TV has an option to connect to a generic server.
this can be done with SMB, FTP or Plex.

but how has this to be done ??
are there instructions for these protocols ??

my choice would be to use the Plex protocol, as I have a PMS server running.
but what port should be used for this ??

are you referring to the possibility to access the Plex server from outside my local network ??
in the settings menu, this is called "Remote Access"
