VLC on Apple TV -- Plex Media Server

the current version of VLC for Apple TV has an option to connect to a generic server.
this can be done with SMB, FTP or Plex.

but how has this to be done ??
are there instructions for these protocols ??

my choice would be to use the Plex protocol, as I have a PMS server running.
but what port should be used for this ??

in the settings menu, this is called "Remote Access"
