Subtitles cause video lag.

I have the iPad 4 with iOS 10.3.3 running VLC 3.1.2. I'm using ffmpeg to pipe m3u8 videos with tvheadend as my backend. The videos play perfect without any subtitles enabled, but the second I enable them the video begins to lag. The lag only occurs when a new subtitle string is displayed. The audio continues to play without any issues; however.

The PlayerXtreme and the OPlayerHD apps play the exact same video with subtitles without issue. I much prefer VLC player though, and I hope this can be corrected.

The resolution of the video is 1280 x 720, and the resolution of the iPad is 2048 x 1536. The video format is mpegts. This issue also occurs on an iPad Air running iOS 11 and an iPad pro running iOS 12.

I'm afraid that's an internal scalability bug, not going to be fixed easily

Hi everybody ! I'm experiencing the same exact problem, in windows 10. the video goes smooth without subtitles, but when I enable them, I notice microlags when the sub's string appears. Lags aren't so big, but I notice them and it annoys me. CPU is under 10 % and memory is under 45 % so I don't think it's a PC problem.
Any idea to fix this issue ?

Hello, I have the same bug as well. There is a lag each time when a subtitle is displayed. With no subtitles it is running perfectly.
I tested many MKV files (1080p, 2160p) with German, English and Chinese subtitles.

My device: Sony KD-55XE9005
OS: Android TV 7.0 (Patch-Level 1. august 2018)
Kernel: 3.10.79
VLC: 3.1.4

As I saw there are many of us having this issue, on different platforms. To be fair, I have to admit that this problem occurs to me not only in VLC bot also in other pleyer, but sincs VLC is my favourite I would like to fix it at least in vlc

Hi, I haven't finished to clean up the fix, but it is a known issue and has a fix for the development branch. It should be greatly mitigated soon.

I bought a new Sony android TV and it is really disappointing that the subs in VLC player cause such a bad experience.

Can I fix this by using VLC beta?

Hey everyone! I found a solution for myself. I just switched my subtitle encoding to UTF-8 From windows something something. And it works fine. No changes in the shape or look of subtitles too. Hope it helps someone!
