Video picture frozen, but audio plays (mp4)

Postby ktx » 19 Feb 2018 21:14

iPad Pro
iOS 11.2.5
VLC 3.0.1

I put two mp4 videos into the VLC app on my iPad through iTunes file sharing. One plays back perfectly (it's only 20 minutes long), but the other will only play back the audio (an hour-long video). The image remains a frozen blur.

I went back to my computer and checked the file--it plays back perfectly well in Quicktime. No problems at all. They are both mp4 files.

I saw in a thread below that someone fixed this problem by turning off Hardware Decoding in the settings, so I turned this off as well. When I went back to the video, initially it started playing just as it should (full audio and video). Just to be sure the whole video would play, I dragged the little thingy to the right to see if the whole video would play correctly. That caused the image to freeze again, and I'm back to my original situation.

I tried several other things: force-quit the app and restarted the iPad, but neither helped.

OK, here's something weird that just happened.

I started playback of the problematic video again to check something after posting this thread, and then I clicked the iPad Home button without first pausing the video or pressing Done. I didn't realize the audio would continue playing even after I left the app.

So I then went back to the app to stop the video, and now the picture is moving!

No idea what's going on.

We still have issues with Apple's hw decoder :/

Sample welcome.

So you think the Hardware Decoding setting is the key to this issue? I should leave it set to OFF?
