SMB in VLC still not working on iOS.

Postby Funkforce » 09 Feb 2018 07:35

Since 2 updates back I can’t connect to smb anymore, nothing happens, worked fine for years.
Works in many other players and apps.
I have also tried creating new servers, shares etc. since I have several computers and VLC just can connect to smb anymore. Just searching for hours.
And ofc. I have password for the share setup. Disabled firewall etc.

Reinstalled app 10+ times with restarts in between.
Reset iPad - same problem.
Tried cache cleaners - no luck.
Have SMB shares on different computers with different ip:s - same problem
Checked other apps - SMB works flawlessly in other apps, I can connect to my shares with Infuse and Xtremeplayer on the same iPad.

iPad Air 2
Latest iOS 11
Latest VLC from App store

I'm also experiencing this same issue with VLC on my iPad. Previously, it was able to load and play files over SMB just fine, but now doesn't see them anymore.

I've reinstalled VLC on the iPad, tried sharing different folders through SMB, restarted all my devices and my wifi router, etc. Nothing seems to help.

Other video players apps on my iPad are able to play the shared files with no issue. I also have VLC installed on my iPhone, and it works fine (so far). I'm only experiencing the problem with VLC on my iPad.

Incase anyone is google searching this problem like I was I wanted to give the answer.... I was trying to access my network drive on my imac from my kitchen iPad using the local network option on VLC for iOS and it would just spin and not access the folders.

Not sure if apple added another layer or it was always like this since I don't use SMB that often but I had to go to System Preferences/Sharing - Options button and click the user I wanted to access at the bottom of the dropdown. Then put store my password there. It's the same exact place you turn SMB on at the top of the drop down.

Anywhoo.. It fixed the issue for me and wanted to add this incase anyone else was having the issue and searching google like me.

Hello Everyone,
I have found the problem and the solution.

Problem - when opening "VLC for mobile" on IOS devices like iPhone, iPad or even MAC or none apple devices, the NAME that is discovered automatically on the connection session is considered by all of us (by mistake) as a "display name" but actually, it's a "HOST NAME", the hostname is not being resolved to the IP address of the remote SMB (samba) server, and that is why you cannot connect to the SMB server.

Solution - change the HOST NAME from a WORD to the actual IP ADDRESS of the SMB server, enter a user and a password and a workgroup (i leave it at WORKGROUP) at the relevant lines, PORT (i always leave it blank).
I was able to work with my servers as i always did.

Hop that solved your issue too.
Good luck.
Eyal E.
