Fast forward with Universal Remote on AppleTV

Postby bgriffis » 06 Feb 2018 03:47

Apple TV, 4th gen
tvOS 11.2.5

I have an issue related to fast forwarding with a Universal Remote on my AppleTV. If I use the native Apple remote I can fast-forward and rewind without issue. However, the Apple remote is using a "slide" action to jump around within the video. The difference with a universal remote is that there are some "extra" codes for fast forward and rewind that the AppleTV supports. So for example, in the Netflix app I can fast forward and rewind fine using these buttons. However, it seems the VLC app will not support these IR codes correctly.

My expected behavior is that I press the fast forward button once to initiate fast forward. Then when I wish to stop fast forwarding I should be able to hit "play". However, if I do this, the video will not play properly, e.g. there is no audio and the video is playing too fast. Even trying to hit pause/play a few times will not "fix" playback.

I've seen this issue with *.mov files recorded from my iPhone, as well as with *.mkv files ripped from discs. I've seen the issue playing back with UPnP and SMB.
