Can't select external subtitles when video has embedded subtitles

I wanted to view some videos on my iPhone, which have subtitles embedded, but I want to view them with external subtitles. The subtitles are in the same folder with the same name as the view. The movie is accessed via SMB. When I click to change subtitles, I get only the option to choose the embedded ones. Is this by design, or am I doing something wrong? I use version 2.8.7 of VLC.

We fixed subtitle issues with 2.8.9. Let us know if your issue still exists with that version
