VLC 1.1.1 crash at startup

Postby Pcullen65 » 19 Dec 2017 23:17

I have two 3rd gen Apple TVs running TVOS 11.2.1. One has VLC 1.0.7 running just fine. The other upgraded to VLC 1.1.1 and on that one VLC crashes at launch. Anyone else with this problem?

Yes! this has been plaguing me for a couple weeks! The only thing I haven't tried is completely wiping the device and starting over. Is there a way to obtain a beta copy? Thanks!

VLC will launch if you disconnect the Apple TV from your network (wifi or wired) - but that seems less useful...

VLC version 1.1.1 (111.10)
AppleTV A1842 tvOS 11.2.1 (15K152)

Have the same problem. It seems to be cause by having a QNAP NAS (Maybe other brands too) connected to the same network. If you turn off the QNAP NAS or just turn off Microsoft Networking on the QNAP NAS, VLC will then launch no problems on Apple TV and Apple TV 4K BUT as others have pointed out what's the point of that???

I also use PlayerXtreme Pro on Apple TV and it works without any problems with the QNAP SMB turned on.

Definitely something up with VLC's coding
PLEASE fix

Not sure if here's the right place for this kind of thing, but I exported a symbolicated crash report from my Apple TV, and it is available here, if anyone wants to take a look. :)
I even tried to download and compile the source, but I'm not a big can of CocoaPods.

Edit: Found the problem and successfully patched it. Now trying to contact any VLC developer to confirm if it is reliable enough.

Just seen this, but I've got the same problem with Apple TV 3rd Gen running 11.2.5 and VLC 1.1.2 together with a Synology NAS. Been working perfectly with 1.1.1 but since the upgrade it recognises the server both by UPnP and SMB but quits when it tries to connect. I've done a complete reset and reinstall but it still fails.

I've just tried PlayerXtreme - don't know if the Pro version is worth the money - and that it working OK so it looks as though it's something with VLC. 1.1.1 still works on the iPad so I'm leaving that as it is.

{Note to mods: sorry for the multiple posts but I saw this after I posted earlier]

I see VLC 1.1.3 is now out and I'm using it on my Apple TV. There is still an error msg when it starts trying to locate the server (Synology DS216+II), but it does continue after that and appears to be working OK.
