Unable to USB Transfer videos from Mac iTunes to iPad

Hello.
I have Macbook Air running Sierra 10.12.4 with iTunes 12.7.2.58 and trying to transfer an .mkv file over iTunes to my iPad Mini with latest VLC player. There is no "apps" tab which VLC instructs me to use. My videos are quite large for Wifi. Is there another way to transfer over USB?
