Airdrop MKV files to VLC iOS not working

Hi all

Not having success when using Airdrop to transfer .mkv files from my iMac (OSX 10.13) to VLC player on my iPhone (iOS 11).
When I attempt this, the iPhone displays the large VLC orange traffic cone with the text:
"XXX would like to share a file that requires an app from the App Store" with options to go to the App Store, which lead to a blank page, or save file to iCloud drive.

So I am having to go the other ways o transfer the files. Any help with Airdropping MKV would be great.
