Outputting a still image when not playing video

Hi there,
We're working on using VLC on an iPad for a kiosk that we're creating for PBS to help advertise the upcoming Vietnam War documentary from Ken Burns. Currently we're happily using VLC to display content to a television mounted above the iPad on a kiosk. We've loaded interviews from Vietnam vets into VLC, and people are able to select and play them back with zero issue. First, thanks so much for the work on this free app. It's outstanding.
Now comes the question;
Currently when connected to a television via the HDMI dongle from Apple, VLC displays a black screen until you select content to play. Is it possible that instead of a black screen that we display a graphic when video is not active? I know it's probably a long shot, but I figured it doesn't hurt to ask!
Thanks again for your time and work.
