Certain .avi Files Not Working on VLC App

When I am watching one of my shows (.avi file) on my computer VLC works perfectly. However, when I am watching this show on my mobile devices (iPad using VLC app, or Apple TV) it doesn't work. It doesn't load audio or video. I am using a wireless external hard drive to stream the show. Other .avi files work fine, except this one show. I downloaded it from a torrent. How can I repair the file / fix the app?
