Apple TV 4th Gen and VLC Streaming Question

Postby eyeonthedesign » 31 Jul 2016 06:25

I have 4 Apple Tv's in my home 4th gen. I use the VLC app on the Apple Tv's to stream my mkv files. The MKV files are on my WD MyCloud.
Sometimes the mkv files freeze up on me. I stream through my wireless N router.

If I were to purchase a new Wireless AC router, do you think that would solve the occasional streaming freeze I get on the Apple TV's?
My thinking is if I use the 5ghz on my Apple Tv's connecting to the AC router that also has 5ghz, the freezing and lag might stop.
My internet speeds are 300mbps.

Thoughts?

Hi
Do you connect to your WD using DLNA?
If so, try to connect using SMB (Sharing).
Sometimes such disk boxes tries to convert the stream on the fly which isn't the case using SMB.

I aslo experience the same where it is an SMB share I've hosted from a Windows system as well as tried sharing from my router's USB port and the Apple TV is connected via LAN. Seems to happen with higher bitrate videos but have not played around much to see where the "limits" are.
