Will VLC on AppleTV play ISO files?

Hello,

I read that VLC on AppleTV will not play ISO movie files of all my DVD's.

These DVD ISO's are on a NAS drive and I want to open and play them in VLC.

Am I right they won't play becuase of the license?

Thankyou.

They don't play due to a license conflict but probably a different one that you had in mind. The DVD playback libraries used by VLC are under the open-source license GPLv2 and this license is not compatible with the iOS and Apple TV's App Store's Terms of Services - therefore, distributing those libraries on the store would be a copyright violation and therefore we can't do it. Technically, there is nothing preventing this, but this legalese regrettably does :/

Thankyou Felix Paul Kuehne. Thats makes sense.
So it is down to Apples Terms and conditions, good to know.

What I think I will do is keep my ISO's as backups and then have a drive with just my films (dont really need the extras and bonus features) in a playable format.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi, this used to work, even after the Dolby codec support was disabled. This doesn't work anymore, still. Please fix.

It never worked and it was never a supported or advertised feature. VLC includes a MPEG PS demuxer which can play some (non-encrypted) ISO files with heavy artifacts and that's unchanged.
