iPad Air 2 choppy playback

Hi folks!
I'm a longtime user of VLC, but this is my first time experimenting with local streaming. I downloaded the Plex Media server onto my PC and shared some movies. I'm able to access them just fine through the VLC app on my iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6s, but the higher quality files are VERY choppy. An example of "higher quality" is a 720p H264 MKV file, so nothing crazy. That will BARELY play, but 480P AVIs seem to play just fine. I initially thought it had something to do with my network, but the videos play perfectly fine via the Plex app. I would just use that, but I have to pay. Any ideas?
I initially experimented with this because I'm debating whether or not to get an Apple tv 4 to stream my media to my tv, so I want to make sure I don't have this same problem if I buy one.
Thanks for any help!
