File extension missing and media library empty

For about a few weeks maybe I've noticed that if i download an avi file from a local network drive it does not show up on the media library. I've tried uninstalling vlc. Restarting phone, etc. I noticed when connected to iTunes that the files I downloaded from the network show in the app but are missing the avi file extension. If I add a file manually thru iTunes and sync. Those files work fine and have the avi extension.

I can clearly see the file name while the file is downloading and it's missing the file extension.

I have the newest version of vlc on iOS 9.2. The network server shows as a UPnP. SMB servers no longer have the download option. Streaming these files work fine. It's just not keeping the file extension when they download.

I've been having the exact same problem since mid-December and I've think I just found the solution. On your local network drive change the file name so that it's xxxx.zzz in which xxxx is one word and zzz is the appropriate file extension. File names with multiple periods seem to be the problem. For example downloaded.file.from.internet.mp4 won't work but file.mp4 does.

I should add that if the file has a "title" embedded with periods in the name that should be renamed as well.

Maybe this multiple period issue can get fixed in a near future release?

Yes, I'm looking into it.
