SMB not working

I am trying to connect to a Verbatim Mediashare which is a device which shares a USB stick over wifi. It supports SMB and I can successfully connect to it using Kodi, however when I try to connect using VLC iOS I just get a screen with no contents.
I've tried ports 139 and 445 too but made no difference.
I have just updated VLC iOS to 2.7.1 which was released today hoping to fix my SMB problem but its hasn't.

Hi Felix. Yes that's the one!
Btw when I said Kodi, it is iOS version, so from the same iPad device I am using VLC. I just tried OPlayerHD and SMB works fine there too with the MediaShare device.

After the last few updates, I am still having a problems with SMB. Same issue as before, nothing shows up after connecting.
I know you probably can't test this exact device, but all other apps I've tried work fine, can't see why VLC would be different.
Does VLC follow any kind of standard for SMB connections?

Ok its finally working!
The problem? My login to the SMB connection was a user with a blank password. For some reason VLC doesn't like that. After changing the password it can now read the folder contents!

This is no longer working on the latest version of VLC (3.1.5 All along the watchtower)
I am using the exact same settings saved in VLC from previous connections where it was all working fine.
I tried a different app (PlayerXtreme) and that can read the SMB device fine. Although I prefer to use VLC.
Any help appreciated.

Not totally sure but I just tried Infuse app and you can select the version of SMB to connect with and I chose v1 and it connects fine. I don’t know if that helps.
However VLC iOS was working ok before with same device.
Btw the actual problem is when I try to connect I just get a loading spinner and doesn’t do anything after that
