What's happening instead? Is it similar to this report? https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/14978

I have the same problems with hebrew subtitles.
This is a new issue since version 2.6.0
I have ios 8.1.2 and everything was fine till I updated today.
It seems like the hebrew glyphs are not recognized anymore.
Looks like an encoding issue.
I removed and went back to previous version.
Good thing I had a backup

As I have a new iPad I didn't had a backup for restore but
I start over because there was nothing to lose so now I need an old version of vlc
But every link leads me to vlc 2.6.
Is there a link to finally solve it?

The new version of VLC does have trouble displaying subtitles which happened to me recently. What I did is to encode videos with embedded subtitles so the subtitles are parts of the video scenes. Though the subtitles will be displayed all the time, better than none of them, right.

Yes, the issue is that the text-encoding option in the Settings panel is no longer taken into account for playback. We will fix that for 2.6.2 (2.6.1 is already on its way for review but without that fix).
