We don't have a testing device for this setup, so we can't help.
Help from third parties would be welcome.

I'm afraid you can't unless you dump VLC's and the WD device's UPnP communication, which might be difficult.

Just to document the problem a little, I have found that VLC locks up when I try to use UPnP in anything after VLC version 2.0.8
I'm running Win XP SP3 32-bit. The UPnP server is a Humax HDR Fox T2. It works fine with vlc-2.0.8-win32. It fails with:
vlc-2.1.0-win32
vlc-2.1.1-win32
vlc-2.1.2-win32
vlc-2.1.3-win32
vlc-2.1.5-win32
vlc-2.2.1-win32
On a laptop running Win 8.1 64-bit I find the same thing except that clicking on UPnP in the playlist simply does nothing at all. It doesn't even remove the display of content for the previously-selected area (e.g. 'Discs'), nor does it seems to be waiting at all.
I see from another thread that developers are working on UPnP, hoping to have it fixed in v3.

And that is totally unrelated to the discussion here.

Hey,
My problem solved. It was some issue at my cloud and not vlc side.
I sit for few hours and solved it. It is showing contents now. Subtitles are not working though, will check it that issue now.

I am having the same problem.
Setup: Server is Windows 7 running TVersity 2.6. This is known working since the PS3 can access it just fine.
The client is VLC 2.2.1. Antivirus and Firewall are turned off. The TVersity server shows up in the UPnP list but no folders can be accessed. It occasionally crashes.
Windows Media Player does work on the client machine.

It turns out it is working.
Very, very slowly.
It appears to load every directory in the entire server rather than just the directory I was attempting to access.

In fact, VLC for iOS requests the directory only you are trying to access. However, I never heard about that UPnP server before and hence it is completely untested. Maybe they expect a dialect we can't speak. Will check.
