Can't get wifi sharing to work for VLC on iPad

Hello to all,

I've followed the steps outlined here:

https://wiki.videolan.org/Documentation ... Fi_Sharing

but each time I open Safari (or any browser on my MacBook Pro) and put in the IP address quoted in VLC on my iPad it just grinds and then times out.

Is there a setting on my iPad or MBP that I should have enabled to get this to work?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bowjest

Test with Firefox or Google Chrome. Or delete your wifi acces. And again test

There is no setting needed. Just make sure that both devices are on the same wifi network and that the router is not blocking device to device connections. This is sometimes the case on public WiFi.

I've tried 3 different browsers - no luck.

I'm looked at my router config and according to the current settings, everything should work.

I guess I'll try deleting access and setting it up again, but would rather not as I work from home and if anything goes wrong I'll be in major difficulties.

Ehm, random weird question: any chance you are running a IPv6-only network at home? If yes, consider enabling IPv6 mode in the VLC for iOS settings.

I've found the cause of the problem for this issue - sort of.

A few days ago my powerline extender died and I had to buy a new kit (Maplin Av500). I cloned the settings from the router to the extender and had my network back up and running again. Great. I then decided to check my iTunes wireless sharing from my MBP to my AppleTV. Miraculously, this started working again as did wireless drag and drop of videos via browser to VLC for iOS. Great again. But yesterday while watching a video on AppleTV it just dropped suddenly. So I restarted iTunes and all was fine for a few minutes until it all dropped again. This time I had to reboot my MBP to get the wireless connectivity back. Then, again, after a few minutes it died again and now I can only connect my MBP/iTunes to my AppleTV unit via a CAT5 cable. VLC for iOS also now no longer connects (see my initial post above). So I'm right back where I started.

And just to confirm: I have NO PROBLEMS with internet connectivity for any of my devices themselves, I just can't get VLC for iOS or AppleTV to connect wirelessly to my MBP.

I have NOT changed any settings since setting up the new powerline extender (which enabled everything to work as expected - VLC for iOS included) and I have not installed any new apps or altered anything on my router. It all just went from working to not working.
