Duplicate files appear

Postby SulaymanF » 22 Mar 2015 16:10

I add files to the VLC app via both iTunes and via WiFi server. Via both routes, the video files appear as duplicates in the All Files menu. There is only one copy of each file, but it shows up in the menu 2-3 times or more. Deleting one copy deletes all copies in the list. Sometimes the image previews are different, but often they're the same.

This is running on iOS 8.1 and 8.2, iOS app version 2.4.1(1)

I tried that, and it seemed to work for some files, but now it's back again. Duplicates are reappearing.

Hi there

Have the same problem.
Seems in my case that this happens when i copied multingual mkv files.
Works fine with other formats (i haven't tested all them out though)

I, too, am having this problem, although with one .ogg file in particular (it actually keeps duplicating with successive re-launches of VLC)

The problem persists on both iPhone and iPad running iOS 8.3, VLC version 2.5.1. The problem seems to appear on both adding videos via iTunes or via in-app web server. Sometimes the thumbnail is the same, and other times it's at a slightly different point in the video, as this screenshot shows. Deleting one instance deletes the file and all duplicates. iTunes storage shows only one copy of the file is present in the app.

Same problem here - sorta...

I've stared at this problem for hours trying to figure out a pattern on why the duplication is occurring. I think I've figured it out, but it make no sense to me. Here's my observation...

In the IOS VLC app I only see duplicate filenames when the filename of the video contains certain Cyrillic characters. Specifically the Й / й and/or the Ё / ё Cyrillic characters.

For example, a filename of "Ратмир и Серж - Девчёнка.mp4" will produce duplicates because of the ё in the filename. Likewise a filename of "Сергей Лазарев 7 цифр.mp4" produces a duplicate as well because of the й in the filename.

If I rename the filenames -omitting the ё or й Cyrillic characters, and resynchronize using iTunes, the duplicates disappear.

I realize that everyone else is seeing that happen with English titles, and the commonality between the titles reported in this thread seems to be a semicolon or question mark being used in the title. Something is going on with special characters tripping up the VLC app whether it's the English semicolon / question mark or the Cyrillic Ё / Й.

Operating Environment
iPhone 7 Plus 128 GB
IOS 11.0.1
VLC 2.8.3 (283.2)
iTunes 12.7.0.166
Video file formats - .mp4 only

That's my two cents worth.
