Playback of HEVC format on iPad video not working

I have the VLC for iOS 2.3.0 (latest available) and running on two devices... iPhone 6 and iPad (2nd generation). When I play a MKV video using the HEVC codec it runs fine on the iPhone 6 (both running iOS 8.1.2), however I can only hear the audio on the iPad, no video is showing, just getting a black screen. Any others people experiencing this bug? It doesn't seem to matter what resolution the video is. Thanks!

Ok, thanks for the reply. Good to know this was a known problem with 2.3.0 and will be addressed in the upcoming release. Hopefully we will see it shortly!

Why isn't 2.4.x here so we don't have to wait for the store?

Because its not out yet. Direct download links to iOS apps do not help you, usually.

Can someone tell me what resolutions are supported? I have an iPad mini, and an iPad Air, and trying to playback a 2.5MBps stream (1920x1080) is all pixelated and chunky. I saw this on the h265 app as well. I'm thinking that this is a processing power issue now. What have other people gotten to work?

H265 has very high CPU consumption.

I've downloaded the latest version (was really excited to see it) and updated it on my iPad. I tried running a few different HEVC videos and none of them worked. All still exhibit the same problem of broken video and fine audio. My fear is given its an iPad 2 (second generation) it may simply not have the power needed to decompress it (all videos are 720p so I would have thought it should work). Anyone have any suggestions?

Just to add, I'm running iOS 8.1.3, VLC version is 2.4.1 (1). The iPad is a model MC705C/A. When trying VLC, I have no other apps running in the background (other than system services). The HEVC video is 1280x720, 23 fps, 483kbps bit rate. I've tried several different HEVC video and all have the same problem... however playing them on my iPhone 6 with the same version of iOS and VLC, no issues.

Thanks!

Your device simply has not enough power, probably. HVEC/h265 is _very_ cpu-consuming.

Most video players apps including Windows Media Player, VLC can’t read and play H.265 codec perfectly since H265 has very high CPU consumption.

Hi,

How can you play HEVC on your iPhone 6, when it has not much better cpu than iPad mini 2nd gen ??

Im trying to stream from windows 7 (i5 2,3 ghz) to iPad mini 2nd gen (vlc 2.6.1), but now I found this topic I understand a little bit more.

Just do not stream in HEVC. If the CPU cannot play it, it cannot play.
