No Subtitles on iPad2 Viewing local mkv files

I am having a problem displaying subtitles (captioning) with the VLC player on an iPad2 when mkv files are stored locally on the iPad2 (iOS version 7.1.2 and VLC for iOS version 2.3.0). Subtitles work great when viewing mkv files stored on a Synology NAS using the Synology DSFile app on the iPAD2. I use the mkv container in Handbrake so the default iPad player is not pulled up when accessing movies on the NAS.
When I transfer the mkv files to the iPad2 using iTunes file sharing (using the VLC app section) the files go directly into the VLC player library on the iPad2 and can be played without a wifi connection. However, when watching these local movies on the iPad2 the Subtitles are not present. Subtitle selection shows up in the Video pull-down menu (Video>Subtitles Track>Tract 1) but the subtitles do not display. Subtitles work fine when accessing these movies on the NAS with the same iPad2.
