Streaming FLV files over a network connection

Hi,
Apologies if this is covered elsewhere but it's such a peculiar situation none of the searches I've done have returned anything remotely similar.
I have a Kingston MobileLite Wireless USB and SD Card reader which can stream videos to my iPad Air but it won't stream .FLV files. I have installed VLC on the iPad and if I sync .FLV files to the pad, VLC will play them. VLC will also detect the Kingston device under the "Network" location, and stream video files from there. It handles .MP4, .AVI and .WMV formats with impunity, But for some reason it does not seem to "see" .FLV files in the SD card or the and USB device.
Am I missing something? Should .FLV fils be detected and streamed? And if so - what am I doing wrong or not doing right?
Thanks in advance
