"VLC Error 1001" in VLC 2.3.0 for iOS 7

Running iOS 7.1.2 and VLC 2.3.0 on my iPhone 5, I try to download a video file from DropBox. In 4 out of 5 times the download fails with the error message "VLC Error 1001. Operation could not be completed. NSURLError Domain error - 1001". This happens no matter what the file format (.avi, .mkv, etc.) I'm trying to download.

I would like to know what condition / occurrence causes this error message and what, if anything, I can do about it.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Anyone?

Are you trying to do downloads on mobile connectivity or using very bad wifi?

I thought of that. Mobile Connectivity, no. WiFi signal is strong and constant. It never drops out on any other activity and I don't think it is dropping out when I try downloading from Dropbox to the iPhone. I have an Apple TV and play videos on the iPhone over the WiFi network and it never drops out. I think this taxes the WiFi the most of all because the video stream has to go from the iPhone to the router and back from the router to the Apple TV all at the same time. The WiFi performs without incident doing this.

I'm still interested to know what condition causes this error message.

Thanks for the interest in my problem and the reply.
