Folder structure, subtitles

New to VLC 2.3.0 for iOS, and it's mostly great, but I have a couple issues relative to using it with my NAS drive (from my iPad Mini 7.1.1):

1. With a program called File Explorer I can find my videos and direct them to play in VLC, but if I try to find them from VLC itself, selecting the NAS (Local Network>UPNP>NAS) I see the structure differently:

As built:
\\NAS\Public\Documents
\\NAS\Public\Music
\\NAS\Public\Photos
\\NAS\Public\Videos
\\NAS\Public\Videos\Movies
\\NAS\Public\Videos\Television

But from VLC Local Network I see instead:
Browse Folders
Music
Pictures (sic)
Video
Video\All Video
Video\All Video\"vids at level \\NAS\Public\Videos above"
Video\Folders
Video\Folders\Videos\"vids at level \\NAS\Public\Videos above"

Nowhere can I find either my Movies and my Television folders. Can someone suggest why? FWIW the NAS is FAT32-format.

Another oddity (clue?) is that the NAS appears without requiring a logon of any sort from VLC, which troubles me. :? I guess the NAS, which "broadcasts" via WiFi, once connected to a device via the WiFi password doesn't need/want any more credentials...? Looks like it.

2. The docs suggest external subtitles are supported, but my identically-named *.srt files don't appear onscreen, nor can I find any way to select them as e.g. with the PC version.

Thanks for any feedback.

1. what you expect is SMB shares, but VLC for iOS only support DLNA so far.
2. it works only for local files.
