Extreme Slow & Bad Responses

So I'm trying to use the VLC app and I'm continuously getting problems with it.
1. The app is extremely slow. Whatever I try, the app's really slow in response. Often, the app just hangs, with a map selected. I tried restarting the app, the device, the app and the device, playing around with the settings.. Nothing that I tried so far, worked.
2. The app has a bad response. I tried to check out whether a movie or such would stream decently to my phone, but all that happened was empty folder loading.
I've got my movies/series all sorted;
Movies are sorted on year and duologies/trilogies/etc are in movies > series.
Series are sorted on alphabet, then season and then on episode.
I know this is quite a lot of data to read, I could live with it if it takes a while, but at least gives me what's actually on my NAS.
3. I tried using the search to see if it would help, but I don't even know whether it will load anything other than whatever's in the open directory? Or does it search into deeper directories? Else it's either really slow or not working, because I tried a couple of movies and all I got was 'no results'...
In addition to this, here's a screenshot which shows you what I continuously get, an empty screen even though I'm 1000% sure I've got my NAS filled with files.
