iOS 5 "failed to install"

I downloaded various binaries from
http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc-iOS/, added them to iTunes, added them to the device and hit "Apply". All versions that I tried (1.0 to 2.1) all failed after copying and "Installing..." to my iPad first gen.
Am I missing something?

Download VLC from the App Store. It will automatically provide an iOS 5 compatible version. The download provided on our website will run on so-called jail broken devices and VideoLAN owned devices only.

The version on the App Store just tells me that iOS 6 is required. It does not provide me with an older version of VLC. I tried following
these steps as well without success.

This is very weird. I just checked the App Store configuration of VLC for iOS and version 2.1.3 (the one you need) is still available for download. Are you trying to download it from your device? If yes, try using iTunes on your Mac or PC. If not, try using the App Store on your device.

Using both the device's App Store and the Mac/PC's iTunes failed for me. It never offers me v2.1.3. Is there anything I need to do to request that version from Apple?

I just now purchased in iTunes what I thought to be VLC from the iTunes store for £1.99 with the objective of then downloading version 2.1.3 onto my old iPAD running iOS 5.1.1. It was identified as VLC Media Player Streaming Pro by Erwin Ollivier. I assumed it to be what was required because it had "Player" in the title, whereas others just said Streamer. I now see that it is version 1.1 rather than 2.x. Where can I get the correct app please.

Please ask for a refund. This app is a scam and blatant violation of our copyrights. We asked Apple to remove it but so far they did not comply to our requests.
Regarding the previous work-around for iOS 5, since the official app is currently not available, there is no way to do it right now (and I fear that Apple won't re-enable previous releases once they accept our app again, so I assume that iOS 5 support is gone for good. Very sorry about that).
