44.1kHz/24bit wav files playing but no sound.

On an iPhone SE (3rd gen) with ios 16.5.1

I have imported some audio files (44.1kHz/24bit wav) organized in a m3u playlist.
Nothing very large, around 20MB mostly, about 1:30 min length)
(transferred from macOS via finder to the VLC folder)

I can open the playlist no problem, first file I play seems to work every time.
But randomly files seem to play (meters, play button etc) but have no sound
or sound drops out during playback, does not restart without stopping and restarting the playback a few times.

Seems to happen on any output (built-in speakers, headphones, HDMI external out)

Would that maybe have anything to do with the audio format?
What would be the best way to get consistent playback with HQ audio files?
