Subtitles for offline viewing

Postby wco81e » 14 Jun 2023 10:23

VLC 3.4.5 for iPad doesn't offer a way to "add" a subtitle.

It will only let you download a subtitle and the downloaded subtitle isn't apparently saved.

But the files I'm trying to view actually has a sub directory below the video files and I can "add" them and view them on the Mac OS version of VLC.

I've tried moving the local subtitle file to the same directory, renaming it to match the video file, added .srt extension (though it seems to be just a simple text file, I don't know if .srt has different formatting than text files.

That doesn't work either because when you try to add a subtitle, it only gives you the option to download a subtitle.

And it seems to do it EACH time you try to view the file.

So for instance, I download a subtitle and then put my iPad in Airplane mode with no wifi or cellular connection and try to replay the same file and there are no subtitles and it only would let me download a subtitle again.

It's a curious difference between iPad and MacOS versions, you're more likely to use the iPad in offline mode, like on a plane.

Obviously the VLC app can store local files, after all I downloaded the video to it from my Plex server. But apparently it ignores subtitle files and it can't store downloaded subtitles?

NOTE that I'm trying to play back files that I download to the iPad Files app, that is to the iPad file system, not necessarily videos downloaded from within VLC app. I do have some of those as well and they have the same problems.

But I will go to the Files app and select a file and it has an option to play in VLC and I tap that and it plays fine but for this subtitle issue, which seems to require connectivity, so it makes offline viewing with subtitles impossible, unless the file I'm trying to view had them embedded.

I see on Reddit that some others have run into this issue and their workaround is to re-mux the files and embed the subtitles within them, then add then to the VLC app.

Where is the place to add bug reports or feature requests?

Seems a strange omission that there's no support for offline use of subtitle tracks on videos without embedded subtitles, on an app for mobile devices.
