Folder Cover / Miniature

Postby Quintino » 21 Mar 2022 13:00

It would be great to have the ability to view a Cover (JPEG or something) instead of the default folder icon. Similar to what all the stream services available do.
In order to use this feature, it would the great to have VLC automatically load the Cover for a particular folder by looking inside each folder for an image file that has the same name as the folder.
Looking forward to see this features available.

Hello,

Thank you for your report.

Is this for local network or for cloud services ?

Hi and thank you for your reply.
I am referring to local network since it would be easy to add a cover image file to each folder. However this could also be a great feature for Cloud services.

One of the next big step is to rework the network section.

We will look into this, thank you !

I can confirm that the last release of VLC for the Apple TV has a working version of this. However I truly believe this could be improved.
Currently you can only see the Cover if you navigate inside a folder where you have the movie file plus an image with the cover.
It would be much better to have that cover image on the folder icon that contain both the image and the movie instead of replacing the movie file icon. In reality, you would have a bunch of folders, each one containing a movie plus covers, and by exploring all those folders the user would see all the covers instead of folder icons.
Additionally, I believe it would be great not to show the cover file icon, similar to what is currently happening with the *.srt files that are not shown to the user.
Looking forward for your feedback.
