I might have something for closure on this topic: a possible fix for a future release, or a work around in case someone experiences this
I'm not 100% certain of this due to lack of time to test more, but it seems the vlc media player WIFI transfer was designed to refresh the screen everytime a new transfer started, and a requisite for a successful transfer seems to be that the screen stays on while transfering via WIFI
If you transfers a lot of GBs but the files aren't too large each (from lets say 5 MB to 900 MB), the screen will refresh often and the transfer will succeed
If you transfer files of 1 GB or higher (depending on your router and ipad wifi speed), chances are the screen will go off while the transfers are in progress and they will fail. My ipad has the options to shut down the screen at 2 mins, 5 mins, 10 mins, 15 mins or never. My wifi transfer speed for the ipad is only 1 gb each 5 minutes. If I transfer a video of more than 3 GB. setting the screen timer to 15 minutes won't be enough. I'm guessing many users have slow speed too, although not many need to transfer big files via wifi.
Workaround: the users might need to configure the screen timer to never turn it off, then set an alarm to restore the timer back to 2 or 5 minutes. This is a minor inconvenience but will make the wifi transfer successful.
Possible solution: make VLC software refresh the screen every minute for example, WHILE a transfer is in progress, if it's not too hard to implement.
I hope I wasn't too long winded
