Accessing UPnP server on my iphone

Postby Oxic_Lean » 12 Feb 2021 05:09

Hello VLC Forum, i'm having an issue with Accessing my UPnp Server on my iphone 11. I'm on iOS 14. 3 running VLC 3.2.13 and I can never seem to access my UPnP server from the vlc client on my iphone. other UPnP clients work but i really want to use vlc for its subtitle support. is this a known issue and if so what can i do to fix it? whenever i go to the network tab on my ios vlc client and then click on my UPnP server it just stays on a loading screen with the spinning loading wheel forever and doesn't do anything. any and all help/insight is greatly appreciated!

What is your UPnP server? Can you try with our beta? https://testflight.apple.com/join/bbyXP6Lx

Sounds similar to my issue on an iPad.

Only I had VLC working on the iPad, then it just stopped and is now all spinny wheel.

No use blaming the server, as everything else I can use - Android, Windows and Linux VLC clients can all connect flawlessly.

Just the iOS version. But I had it briefly working.

Suggests it's a caching issue.

Hi, signed up to add my experience with uPnP here. I have an iphone 11pro and ipad 6 both running iOS 14.2. My Asus router has a USB port and uPnP and samba functionality. I have some video files on a USB drive and can access them on most devices through uPnP.

Running VLC 3.2.13 on the iPhone, I see the uPnP server and and can access it just fine, although sometimes it hangs on the first try, and I have to force quit, restart, and then it usually works fine.

On the iPad, however, the uPnP server did not show up at all, it only showed the router as a samba share (which always also appears on other devices as well). I was pretty frustrated, even tried a two other media player apps (one of which showed the uPnP server, but just hanged when trying to play a file).

Switching to the above beta fixed this issue, and I can now access files on the uPnP server from the iPad.

Edit: also, switching to the beta on the iPhone seems to have cured the lagginess.

Hi,
I have a raspberry pi running mini DLNA, up until a couple of days ago VLC on both my iPhone and iPad fail to see the server in the list, however they both see the samba share from the same device. VLC on my PC / Mac, foobar 2000 on my PC, my sony TV, and VLC on my Apple TV all see the server fine. It also appears under this PC on windows 10. I upgraded to the beta of VLC on my iPhone but this has not fixed the issue, I still only see smb shares on my network.
Both running iOS 14.5.
Would appreciate any help you can give.
Thanks,

This is now working, I'm not sure what changed over night but I can see my server and am able to play files from it just fine now. Well, relatively speaking, if it wasn't for the accessibility bugs in the new beta player.

Situation here: Two iPads with the same iOS version (14.4.2) and the same VLC version (3.2.13 375).
Both in the same WLAN, same subnet. Running a ReadyMedia server on an RPi, in the same subnet (as well as a Synology and a FritzBox also in the subnet)
Both can access the ReadyMedia server on port 8200 in the browser.

VLC on one iPad can access the ReadyMedia Server (and Synology and FritzBox). Running wireshark on my laptop: when VLC starts up, there are a lot of multicast packages sent to my laptop (and presumably to the whole network).
VLC on the other iPad sees none of the UPnP systems. Wireshark on the laptop sees no multicast packages.

So, seems that some VLC installations sometimes do not ask around for UPnP devices on startup. Rebooting the iPad did not help.

Any idea for further debugging? Or fixing?

Newest Beta works in iPad like a charm with universal media Server too, but my iphone on this beta doesent find any upnp servers.
Release Version on iphone finds upnp servers but little buggy with universal media Server.

Reinstellend vlc beta/Release a few times, no changes.

Seems to was an iOS 15.0.0 issue, after installing 15.0.1. upnp servers were found on iPhone too.

So all works fine with newest beta.
