We are not aware of any current issues with the latest version 3.2.13. If there is still a problem left with SMB networking, we need to know more about your configuration, your server, whether the network is IPv4 or IPv6 and what's enabled on the server.

the new version of VLC (3.2.13) broke connecting to my SMB shares as well. Happens on two servers: One on Samba 4.12.6, the other using 4.9.18.

I have both my servers configured to allow guest access, they're IPv4, tried both SMB2 and SMB3 values for "server min protocol". VLC will not connect, instead prompting for username and password. If I enter username and password, this ends up in my server log:

My version in AppleTV version 3.0.12 and I am now bit confused in versions. You talk here 3.2 versions and fix for this issue was released in TestFlight a day before my AppleTV version was updated and problem started in my environment.

So is there somewhere beta/nighly 3.2.x version or is my AppleTV without any special TestFlight subscriptions to update my environment to the same latest version you are talking here. 3.2 confuses me as the latest one I can find is 3.0.x from App Store.

maybe Felix can chime in - I don't have Testflight on my iPad at all, just installed the VLC version from the App Store. The "About" window says: Version 3.2.13 (375), based on: 3.0.11.1 Vetinari.

Could be IOS vs. tvOS issue so that in Apple TV it follows bit slower the release schedule. My case has so far been only in Apple TV and when I compare to my IPAD the versions are just as said. In Apple TV 3.0.12 and in IPAD 3.2.13. In Apple TV it started to crash since last week and as I test now my IPAD it does the same thing. It could be related to my sever SMB updates so I will check those now first. However version confusion is clear tvOS follows release schedule slower and that was the answer to my original question.

WIth quick test IPAD with IOS works perfectly if I use separate file browsing app and there login to my samba - choose file I want to play and stream that to IOS VLC player. So currently just issues to get in Samba share via VLC GUI. Otherwise things work perfectly. Workaround is to share stream via airplay to AppleTV - so workaround is found and I can wait until app gets updated in tvOS.

The versions 3.0.12 for Apple TV and 3.2.13 for iOS are using the same version of VLC (a pre-release of 3.0.12). The iOS version numbers differ here because we shipped a new UI for iOS after the general version 3 that marked the .2 release point.

We identified 2 further cases where SMB authentication can fail and will provide another update soonish that will also improve support for Chromecast. It will appear via TestFlight first.

I too have experienced SMB authorization problem since a few days ago (I have 13.0.12 on my aTV4k at the moment)... I have a samba server which has always been username- and password-free, and I can freely connect from any Apple or non-Apple device to it by browsing on the network (it's visible to everyone by using avahi service). The last version of VLC is now asking me for a user name and password and no matter what I enter the authentication fails ("SMB authentication required", "The computer you are trying to connect to requires authentication. Please provide a username..." and so on).

I just submitted 2 new builds to TestFlight (for iOS and tvOS) each to further test additional SMB authentication improvements. Those should be approved by Apple within the next 24h. Feedback would be very much appreciated!

Have tried 3.2.14 (377) with my samba server, which also has empty username-password. VLC tries connecting for indefinite time without success. Version before 3.2.13 worked just fine.

The original problem I reported on iOS and tvOS has been resolved, for me, with the app store versions of the app.

I'm having the same problem. It worked fine yesterday, then the iPad rebooted (I assume it might have updated VLC after that) and it failed. I tried the build you linked and I got the same error as before.

I am running Samba 4.13.0 on Gentoo. I haven't changed any of the default parameters, this is my config after stripping out comments:

Sorry Guys, it seems that it was server side memory allocation problem. Windows server dropped error ID 2017 in logs, fixed it, after that no problem found.

Two months and change. Can we at least have an idea when is the new version coming out or should we just switch to another player?

I had the same or similar issue with:
iphone ios 15.1 vlc app connecting to samba on Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS

Here is what fixed it for me:

On Ubuntu in terminal:

#create a samba password for your ubuntu user

sudo smbpasswd -a <username>

#enter a new password for samba after you enter your sudo password
#this password will be associated with your username

#now restart the samba service

sudo systemctl restart smbd

#######################################
On iphone VLC app:

Network/File Servers/Connect Settings

select SMB at the top
Server: server IP
Port: leave blank
User: username
Password: new_samba_password
WORKGROUP leave as is

Click Connect

It should hopefully work, as long as you're not being blocked by a firewall

I got this answer from a similar post post but the issue wasn't close enough to reference the link.

I'm trying to post a more detailed message but the forum keeps kicking me out. This configuration works with Samba 4 and VLC for anonymous login. I'm running Samba on FreeBSD-13.0 RELEASE on Raspberry pi 4. Before this config I was unable to login from VLC to Samba4. I tested both iOS/iPad Pro and tvOS/Apple TV get 4.

The configuration line that fixed things for me was: "server min protocol = NT1". That lowers the authentication standard under Samba v4 where it was raised to SMB2. From the log messages on my Samba Server, it looks like Samba and VLC could not agree on an authentication standard in my case.
