Is there an issue anymore with NO SOUND on VLC iOS due to losing Dolby rights (Or whatever it was)

Postby coffee_king » 17 Aug 2020 10:53

I haven't updated VLC or my iOS on my iPad Air 2 for a very long time.
The last time I updated VLC the audio completely stopped playing on it due to (Something like) VLC losing the rights to Dolby (Or similar). (Yeah I'm probably wrong on the EXACT reason here)
Does anyone know if this is still so, or was it all sorted etc?
As I'd like to update both.
Thanks in advance.

VLC can use the Dolby decoders included in iOS since iOS 9 was released a couple of years ago. It does not include any internal code implementing these audio formats though. iOS currently exposed AC-3 and E-AC-3 decoding to third party apps. However, Dolby Atmos is not supported (and never was by VLC).

Hi. Thanks for your response but I don't fully understand your response.
If a video file has AC-3 or E-AC-3 audio then the audio will play or not play please?

It will play as long as your device runs iOS 9 or later and is a 64bit iOS device (so iPhone 5s or iPad Pro 1st gen. or any newer device). It will not work on 32bit iOS devices such as iPhone 4S, 5 or iPad 1st - 4th gen.

Just to note:
I have updated to the latest iOS (13.6.1)
and VLC 3.2.11 (353)
I've tried a few videos and all seems fine.
Thanks for the help.
