VLC has at tvOS no hardware decoding for H.265 (HEVC) @ Apple TV 4K

Hello guys,

VLC for tvOS (3.0.6) has no hardware decoding for H.265 (HEVC) at Apple TV 4K (tvOS 12.3)! All my 2160p.mkv files are unplayable!

Why ? Please Help Me! Changelog ## tvOS [3.0.3] · Greatly improved hardware decoding performance for H.264 and H.265 (Apple TV 4K only)

What i did to fix this problem by myself. But the two things was not lead target. No smooth playback over full movie time.
Setting Deinterlace -> On and Hardware acceleration -> On = only stuttering and unwatchable.
Setting Deinterlace -> On or Off and Hardware acceleration -> Off = partially picture Mistakes but otherwise/ partially smooth Playback.

File Info the Container is .mkv...

On PC with MediaInfo (19.04)

Format : HEVC
Format/Info : High Efficiency Video Coding
Format-Profil : Main 10@L5.1@High

On PC with VLC (3.0.7.1)

Codec: MPEG-H Part2/HEVC (H.265) (hevc)

Note: A competition app can play the file's without any problems and smooth playback.

Please Fix!

no Bugfixieng at this moment ;(

VLC for tvOS ( 3.0.8 ) play's no 4k .mkv files smooth with hardware acceleration.

Example File Info the Container is .mkv...

On PC with MediaInfo (20.03)

Format : HEVC
Format/Info : High Efficiency Video Coding
Format-Profil : Main 10@L5.1@High

On PC with VLC (3.0.10)

Codec: MPEG-H Part2/HEVC (H.265) (hevc)

Note: A competition app (Infuse Pro 6.4.2) can play the file's without any problems and smooth playback.

Can we hope of a Fix in the next time ?

i updated my Aplle TV 4k to tvOS 12.4.5 and now i can play by Setting Deinterlace -> Off and Hardware acceleration -> On = smooth Playback (without picture Mistakes).

i updated my Apple TV 4k to tvOS 14.0.1 and it's the same Problem VLC for tvOS ( 3.1.0 ) play's no 4k .mkv files smooth and artifact free with hardware acceleration.

I'm having the very same issue (artifacts and stuttering) even during playback of a 1080p h.265 mkv file on AppleTV 4k.

Currently running 3.0.12

Hello, It's happening to me with the latest version of VLC as of today (03 october 2022). Notice that I'm on latest tvos too (16 I think)

I tested as suggested the Infuse app, which load the file correctly and smoothly.

I'm tring to play a x265 2k file.

It should be an issue using the hardware decoding ? If not it should work smoothly on Infuse too.

Hope a fix will be found !
