VLC 3.2.1 for IOS - Creating Folders/Filetransfer into Folders/ Playlists Sequencing

Postby Connor 1963 » 13 Oct 2019 17:30

Hi all,
I´m using the VLC Version mentioned above on my I-Pad (IOS 13.2.1) I feel that the last Update made using the VLC a whole lot more complicated.
Before the update, I used to transfer video files from my Win PC to my I-Pad (via I-Tunes).
Therefore all files were listed in the VLC App. After that, I created a new folder within VLC and copied those video files into it.
Since the update folders are gone (replaced with playlists?) To play video files in a certain sequence with VLC (i.e. charts) I put a number in front of the filename. With this, the video files were shown in the right sequence also within the Win Explorer and copied in this sequence by I-Tunes.
Now the copied video files are displayed together with all the other video files on my I-Pad (view "Video"). If I want to transfer video files into a playlist I have to mark them manually (in my case 50 files). After the transfer into the playlist, the sequencing within the playlist is lost (I haven't found any sorting-function within the playlist). It was the same case with the older version of VLC. My workaround for this was to manually copy each file in the right order into the folder. After that, the files were shown only within the folder where they had been placed. This is also no longer the case. Because the files are still displayed within the view "Video" (which kinda makes sense). But to go on, you have to manually "uncheck" the file first, in order to check the next file for the copying process. To me, that´s very cumbersome and time-consuming as well. Als,o to manually sorting the file (via touch pen)within the view "Playlist" might be OK for a small number of files, but for a bigger number (50 files), it´s totally impractical also due to the limited display capabilities (you need to scroll to find the file next in line).
Will there be changes to address the problems I´ve mentioned or did I take a wrong turn somewhere?
Best Regards Torsten

Let's hope they give us the function to order our files in folders again.

The feature to handle folder is definitely planned.

As a work around for now you could use the automatic video grouping.

Sadly that would mean that the files will need to share a common prefix, for example, "tvshow-name-episode01", "tvshow-name-episode02" and so on.

By default, the video groups are formed with a detection of 6 characters, you can change that in the settings if needed.

The most important feature of the app is to play videos.
The 2nd most important feature of the app is to organize files properly.

Why was the 2nd most important feature of the app completely removed? And when is it coming back? I would like to know as soon as possible thanks.

Videolan website lists some companies bringing paid support if you want something as soon as possible. Otherwise, please keep in mind that developers on a free application are working for free on the free time they can have for it and have at least little respect for that, instead of posting 5 angry posts on 5 different threads.

Regards,

You know all that needs to be done is to revert to the older version of the app. You know what functionality was taken away, you know the app store reviews are full of people upset about this update. Developers working for free on a free app has literally NOTHING to do with the fact the older version works better and all you need to do is push that version out on the app store so we can enjoy using the app again.

You know how ridiculously simple it is, but want to use the virtues of people doing this for free as a shield for criticism.

And sorry but you don't seem to know anything about development and maintenance. Many things has been refactored to ease the maintenance cost. It's an enormeous work which won't be reverted because you're not happy with it. In other words what you call ridiculously simple is not and is far far more work than 5 min writing and criticizing it on a forum.

I'm not saying that there are no regressions, there are probably some of them. But you won't get anything by complaining so please stop there and report them correctly instead.

Cool story bro enjoy being the name responsible for irreversible damage to the VLC project. Your decision to push a buggy non functional update with some BS rationalization has already resulted in a lot of people losing respect for this team. Your rationalization shows how you shouldn't be responsible in this team. The way my posts have been censored shows where your effort lies, in damage control, and not in doing something as simple as what everyone has suggested, to release a "vlc classic" app with the previous app version that people actually enjoy using.

Your decision to get defensive over the obvious fact this was a mistake is only going to make things worse. I am being loud, but if you silence me it's literally because you can't handle what I am saying. If I'm wrong you would just laugh and move on but you are obviously emotionally unstable from the fact your conscience can't cope with your frontal lobe trying to rationalize this away.

Just release vlc classic. Stop dodging peoples questions and making rationalizations for why functionality that people rely on has been removed.

enourmeous should have a red underline under it because it's not a word btw, red underlines are a way to show spelling errors.

I totally agree with Connor 1963.
I have about 300 videos and audio files organized into several folders.
It is much easier to organize the videos and the audio files on my computer and then upload them to the VLC.
Unfortunately now all the files are listed together and it will take me several hours to go click on every file and add that file to a playlist.
Also the names of the files are sometimes long and I am not able to see the full name of the song or the video to put them in the proper play list.
Another old bug still exists - "undefined" is added to the front of the file name ( I am using VLC 3.2.1 for ios and Chrome/Windows 10 which is the latest version at this time) which additionally makes organizing files with groups useless.
Many times people will be transferring videos and audios from other systems and they are already organized. Now we have to do that work again.

Thank you.

I would like to suggest that the folder names be automatically converted to a play lists and the files to be added to the playlists according to the folder names.
Sorting in the Playlist to also include - sort by song/video title.
This way if someone add to the title "1.", "2." etc - he can redefine the play order of the files.
VLC to me is the only player for iphone that supports playing videos and audios on locked screen.
This feature is really important even for the videos, because many times I just want to listen to the audio of the video file for example when I am driving.
VLC is the best!

I concurs with others above.

I am old school (65+ years) - I barely understand the functionality of smartphones, so I organise my music into folders with the names of the albums and/or artist as the folder names, e.g. all songs by "Chicago" are in a folder called "Chicago", all songs from the Pink Floyd album "Meddle" are in a folder called "Meddle - Pink Floyd". I also strip ALL metadata from MP3s to stop smart-alec software from organising my music the way it thinks it should be organised, i.e. I want 100% control over how I organise my music (which is how it should be).

This worked fine until recently. Now, I find all my music is randomly displayed under "# Unknown Album - Unknown Artist" and all my folder names are nowhere to be seen. I AM BLOODY FURIOUS!! Its took me many hours to organise my music the way I wanted, and now, thanks to developers who can't leave alone, things that were working fine, the whole thing is screwed up.

Please either put it back the way it was, or let us download the previous version, the one that actually worked properly!

I do not see why FOLDERS have to be REPLACED by PLAYLISTS? Organizing as folders is the key WANT reason that people RUN AWAY from Apple & iTunes.

Organized folders can act as or have a DEFAULT play mechanism Alpha Numeric / Sequential etc, but we can and should also be able to create Ad-Hoc Sequence Playlists and / or Cross Folder Playlists (with maybe Absolute and/ or Relevant paths)

Exactly, sometimes I want a Video podcast or something to play in background and just listen to it since I may not watch the Video part of it. Maybe just cast its audio to my Speaker

How can I copy movie files to VLC onto an iPad? I don't have access to iTunes.?

What was the last version that allowed it? And with which version it went away? Please specify/ remember if you can. Thanks.

Currently on iOS15.3 with VLAN 3.2.13 updated 1 year ago. The iOS port still doesn't have playlisting respecting the file structure.

Please fix or restore the feature.

Thanks in advance.
