VLC for tvOS - Access SMB share on different subnet via IP

Postby quex » 16 Jan 2020 23:29

Dear VLC community,

I'm somehow feeling stupid for asking this question, but how can I access a SMB share on a NAS via its IP address? VLC simply says that no network storage was found.
Background: The NAS is in a different subnet on a different VLAN and there are Firewall rules only allowing certain connections - Apple TV <-> NAS is whitelisted on some TCP and UDP ports and works (confirmed with other apps), but VLC does not detect the NAS and I'm not able to manually point VLC into the right direction.

I'd be also interested in how VLC detects the presence of network storage - I assume it's some kind of broadcast protocol, but I didn't have time to patch my notebook into the respective network and fire up Wireshark, so maybe somebod can tell me the details.

Thanks in advance for your help - I appreciate the time you spent in developing this awesome software and helping out users.

Best,
quex

VLC supports three kinds of network announcements protocols right now (namely Bonjour, UPnP and a special protocol for SMB) to find devices on the local network. On iOS, you can also enter the IP / NetBIOS / DNS name of a server to connect to outside your local network. On Apple TV / tvOS, the respective dialog is missing in the latest release. It will be there in the next update so you can connect to anything.

quex - maybe not relevant, but VLC does NOT work with SMB2.

Hi Felix,

thanks for the information. I'm going to wait for the update then.
@glnz: No, that's certainly not my issue.

Best,
quex
