VLC/iOS Bug In Audio Equalizer Pre-Amp

Postby vlciosdts » 30 Aug 2015 21:47

Hi, the audio equalizer pre-amp is always set to above the zero-point when opening a video which of course, causes distortion, ugh.

Occurs with different types of video/audio codec combinations on iOS 8.4 jailbroken on iPhone 5S. Before asking for a file to test, please try to replicate first. Thanks.

The pre-amp level is defined by the selected equalizer profile. See the Mac or Windows version in comparison. The pre-amp level will be the same for the respective profile.

Setting the Audio Equalizer Preamp by default to above the zero-point on the default audio equalizer profile is bad behavior.
Having the Audio Equalizer turned on by default is bad behavior.
Having the Audio Equalize turned on with with way to turn it off is bad behavior.
Saying the any of the points above occur in other ports and thus not an issue, bug, and/or bad behavior is wrong.

Please fix this or explain why having audio distorted by default with no way to set and save the Preamp setting is correct behavior.

Since Apple Music/iOS is getting worse with every update, many users may either flee iOS or move to VLC/iOS and thus this is important.

The equalizer is off by default and if you choose the "flat" profile, there is no distortion. Further, the equalizer is reset every time you restart the app, so again, it is off.

For everything else, you are welcome to file tickets in our bug tracker (https://trac.videolan.org/vlc) or ideally even provide patches to improve the current situation where you see it fit.

The equalizer is not off by default, the Pre-Amp on the "Flat" profile is active, so when setting the Pre-Amp on the "Flat" profile to above the zero-point as a default and then default the equalizer to on, there is distortion by default. If there was an actual setting to turn the equalizer (and Pre-Amp) on/off (like a checkbox) this would not be an issue.

This bug is really bad and easily fixable, please fix it.

Obviously, if you change the preamp like that, you get distortion. :-)

Just reset to a sane value (or choose another profile, and then select flat again).

It's great you quoted me, but it's obvious* you didn't even read this thread. And as a result, you wasted my time and yours.

The "Flat" Audio Equalizer is the default choice; I don't set the Audio Equalizer to "Flat" and never stated so, for you to assume and infer I did makes you look ignorant.
By Default, the Pre-Amp for the "Flat" Audio Equalizer is set to above the zero point.
By Default, the Flat Audio Equalizer and Pre-Amp are on.
By Default, the audio distorts.
...so when setting the Pre-Amp on the "Flat" profile to above the zero-point as a default...
If you actually read this thread you would see through context that I mean VLC is setting and/or VLC devs decided to set the Pre-Amp on the "Flat" profile to above the zero-point as a default. It's ridiculous you responded without reading this thread.

*not needed, but since you chose to use "obvious", I will too.

As Felix already said, just check the desktop version of VLC. I cannot hear any distortion between flat on and flat off.

In fact, a visual toggle for equalizer on/off is not a bad idea. Please do a ticket on trac so we don't forget about it for the next release. Thanks.

More than 3 years later this bug is fixed. I know of a few more bugs, however it isn't worth expressing them because the reception was so poor on this bug and it took 3 years to get this bug fixed.
