Got it to work! Thanks for the tip, Ibuyss! Setup is Apple Time Capsule (old flat version) and AppleTV 4K 32 Gb.

The thing is that you need to change the name of the Time Capsule to the port number (I changed mine to 1024) and NO LETTERS in the field. So go to AirPort Utility in a Mac or iOS and change the Time Capsule or AirPort name to just a port number (not sure if other numbers work. Used 1024 as that port number worked on my iOS VLC apps) then restart/update the Time Capsule/AirPort. I initially tried a name with colon then port number, but it didn't work since VLC TVOs turns all punctuation into dashes. I guess the server name field in TVOS is now actually the port field?

At least it's working again until they make another update.

Thank you, this worked for me.

Hi,

Same problem here, will not connect to SMB share. I've verified that there is no problem with the SMB share itself, by browsing to it via
"FE file Explorer TV" app for TVOS

Please fix this, since I love the VLC app for Apple TV !

Same problem here, can connect to SMB share and navigate throw folders. But it was not possible do show the file with the movie. VLC shows only "Bitte warten" (Please wait).

With the help from the apple support document to switch of "SigningRequired" on the SNB-Server the VLC on the ATV works!

Many thanks for help!!!

Same problem here.

Since the update, can’t see any shares from the Time Capsule (SMB 1) :(

Sadly there’s no way to change version of SMB on AppleTs Capsule :(

For Time Capsule, use AirPort Utility to rename the Time Capsule (not the network, the Time Capsule itself) to a number (no text or letters, just numbers. I used 1024. Someone else here used 2000. Both seemed to work). That will let VLC for tvOS see the files in it. That's what worked for me (have the flat version 3 TB Time Capsule and 4K Apple TV).

Workaround/Interim Fix!

Until VLC release a fix for the 3.0.4 version for tvOS to resolve the SMB problem, a good workaround to "stream" content is to enable Remote Playback on the Apple TV and drag and drop any files from your server (in my case my iMac) onto the Apple TV box.

To do this, make sure the server and ATV4 are on the same network, type in the IP address that displays when you enable Remote Playback in the VLC app into your browser, and then drag and drop any files you want to watch onto the ATV4. Not ideal, but its a hell of a lot better than watching the Please Wait symbol go round and round and round and round .....

My apple tv updated overnight last night (or the night before) I cant remember. It now reads 3.0.6 I think.

Restart your apple tv and leave it in standby. It seems to have pulled down the update by itself. (Make sure you have automatic updates turned on.
