VLC 3.1.5 no video but audio on chromecast

Hi community,

I am using vlc 3.1.5 on my iPhone and since lately experiencing a problem when i want to cast a movie on my Sony Bravia operating an android tv system. While I’m casting a movie I only see a dark screen but audio works fine. Is there anyone facing the same problem and does anyone know why the problem is occurring and what can be done to solve this? Thank y’all in advance

Hard to say like this, so let's try to narrow it down.
What is the said movie? (I do not mean the title of the movie but more of the tech-y stuff.)
What is the iOS version of your iPhone?

I have The same problem. Vlc last update 3.1.5 Audio fine, no video. The problem is mkv videos. iOS 10.

Which kind of Chromecast device do you use? Does VLC nag that it needs to convert the content before chromecasting or does it just send your content?

Both scenarios work great here with a Chromecast Ultra and iOS 12.

MKV files can include all sort of video and audio tracks. Can you give more details about the used codecs please?

vlc works perfectly with mkv files but dont work on Chromecast, only audio. Codecs are ok, play the same movie before vlc update, now dont work . I have Chromecast2 , iOS 10.
Does VLC nag that it needs to convert the content before chromecasting? NO

Hi, thanks for your feedback.
Looks like the problem (no image on chromecast) comes from the H264 codec, it’s the same with other file formats, not only .mkv but .mov and .mp4 files too.

Just confirming that I am seeing this problem too with h264 mp4 file on VLC iPhone X (VLC v3.1.5), casting to an android tv (Nvidia shield tv). Worked ok in previous versions of VLC using this exact file.

I have exactly the same problem.

I have some music videos on my 2018 11" iPad Pro. They are mp4 h264 a52. Most - but not all - are 1080p resolution.

They play well on VLC on the iPad and, until recently, they played reasonably well on my TV (2018 55" LG C8 OLED) casting from the iPad via a first-gen Chromecast - after a bit of stuttering at the start of each video file.

Just recently, the video has not been playing - only the audio is now playing - sometimes along with the album artwork showing on the TV.

Temporary solution. version on iOS 10.3.x & 11 (No Jailbreak or AppAdmin needed): install previous version VLC (3.1.4).

Anybody that has the problem and anywhere he or she wants, like dropbox or framadrop, so that developers can try to reproduce the issue.

Whatsoever, important patches about chromecast fixing them when they have an update-to-date version have been merged into 3.x and 4.x, so the next release that updates libvlc on android or iOS might fix this.

My test:

Iphone 6 or 6 plus + IOS 12.1.3
VLC 3.1.5 (319) or PlayerXtreme 8.5.2 (same issue)
Chromecast Ultra V1.36.141427 + ethernet adaptator or wifi 2.4g
MKV file + DLNA or Samba server

PC cast:
Cast with VLC 3.0.3 + PC Windows 10 + wifi 2.4g to Chromecast: All videos are OK

Local viewing (iphone screen):
VLC IOS + MKV file on DLNA server : All videos are OK

Cast with VLC IOS to Chromecast:
By example video "VLC sample.mkv" (sent by PM) : KO (audio but no video)

Hi, still same issue. I downloaded upgrade 3.1.6, but screen is black, only sound on TV.

It seems there are still some special configuration that the chromecast doesn't support.

In fact, we already have one sample that doesn't display video on the chromecast, we'll just activate transcoding for it when we find the related property that the chromecast doesn't support. But fixing this sample might not fix yours.
So if you want it fixed, it's better to provide yours
