VLC 3.1.0 Brightness and Volume controls not working

Just downloaded the update and I can’t touch adjust brightness and volume on the left and right side of the screen like I used to be able to on my iPad. Is this a bug or operator error on my part? Using an iPad Pro 10.5 inch model. Please advise.
