Latest builds fail to play MANY files

Postby TubaOrNotTuba » 20 Feb 2018 15:11

The most recent two builds of VLC for iOS (iPhone 7 Plus 256, iOS 11.2.6), fail to play half or more of the many hundreds of .wtv files (Windows 7 Media Center TV recordings) I have stored on my NAS. These ALL play perfectly on VLC for Android (LG V20, Android 7.0.0) and using VLC for Windows, but a huge % no longer play in VLC for iOS (they also play just fine in Windows Media Player so there's nothing wrong with the files themselves). What happens is you navigate (sure would be nice if favourites were implemented like we were told you were working on years ago) to the NAS and subfolder, find the file, click it, and it pops up but stays black and never plays. Click Done and pick another and it plays.

Ironically, .dvr-ms (older Windows Media Center files) files seem to play just fine and yet those aren't even displayed unless one changes the extension. Can we get .dvr-ms added to the list of playable formats? They're just MPEG-2 video with MPEG-1 audio.

I hoping you guys can fix this soon. Not having access to hundreds of recordings is really a bummer. Thanks.

We need sample files. Please use https://streams.videolan.org/upload/ and give me the file name afterwards.

These files are 4GB-12GB in size and contain copyrighted material, personal DVR of material such as that is protected and legal in the US just like a VCR was; however, I'm not sure that uploading those files would be legal and your site only allows 1GB files to be uploaded and the smallest one I have is 1.72GB.

Latest iOS build today still fails to play these videos. Felix, please see the PM I sent you earlier today.

I didn't get a PM. Can't you record a 5 min news show, etc.?

FYI, if I turn off hardware decoding videos that used to play that stopped playing, now play again.

No, these are videos recorded on systems that no longer exist. Many hundreds of movies. So sorry, I cannot record a 5 minute show. I have what I have. There won't ever be any more but I also don't want to lose the ability to play the 500+ recordings I have.

if you upload a small file to Google Drive and share a link with either Felix or me, we can try to stream it and see if that might work to reproduce the issue. Without being able to reproduce the issue we can't fix it.
