iOS Client Crashing When Accessing Plex

Postby blarghle » 10 Feb 2018 01:08

Registered just to post this... VLC is my absolute favorite app on just about any platform, but unfortunately after the iOS update today it’s crashing when accessing my Plex server via UPnP. iPad Pro 9.7 on latest iOS (11.2.5), never had any issues until today. It sees the server, but as you drill down through the folders on the server it crashes on the folder for each library (so for example I can go PlexServer>Music>Artists>, and it will crash before getting to any of the Artist folders). I’ve tested with various nested folders on both my music and video libraries, and it crashes before getting any further than the above nested folders.

Sorry if this isn’t the correct place for a bug report. Keep up the great work devs, just the best piece of software out there.

*EDIT* Plex server is whatever the up to date version of Plex is, running on Ubuntu if that makes a difference.

Same problem for me as well, on both Ipad and AppleTV.

But i'm using a twonky upnp server running on windows. When browsing folders the app crashes.

Great application however, thanks for the work involved.

Same with me (VLC crashing), but different setup:

Client latest VLC on two iPads:
  • an old iPad 2 (MC979FD/A) with latest available iOS 9.3.5
  • an iPad Air (MD788FD/B) with latest iOS 11.2.5
Server is a Synology Diskstation DS214play, whatever they use as DLNA/UPnP server, but also everything at latest software versions.

Interestingly, VLC crashes only when I browse a specific folder... so:

Server -> Video -> archive -> whateverotherfolder -> ... works
Server -> Video -> weekly collection -> crash when trying to enter the "weekly collection" folder

So I "mapped" the weekly collection into the archive path as well, and tried
Server -> Video -> archive -> weekly collection -> crash
So it really seems to be something in that specific "weekly collection" folder, and not along the "direct" way.

The "weekly collection" folder contains (or: would contain, if VLC wouldn't crash) 77 subfolders, each with 5 recordings, plus a few files. Is 77 subfolders too much? All my working folders have less subfolders, but more files.

Hope this helps

I have the same issue as alfredMuc with an iPhone 6S and an iPhone6 with a Synology NAS.
Oddly enough, I have noticed that if I use the synology "DS File" application to navigate to the NAS folder and - from the app - chose to open the video with VLC, a link is passed to VLC and it reads the video without any issue.
It looks like the issue is related to the "navigation" to the specific folder.
This problem appeared with version 2.9

The bug #19695 was created on 12/02/2018 and describes a similar issue.

I have added a comment to it and referenced the current forum thread.*

Hope this helps,

A quick update as I may have found what the issue is, and a workaround in the meantime.
If there is a subdirectory containing a parenthesis character "(" or ")", then navigating to the parent DLNA folder from the app will cause a crash.
If you rename the directory to Something else, the problem disappear.

Ex :
ParentFolder
Subdirectory1
Subdirectory2(ParenthesisTest)
Subdirectory3

navigating to "ParentFolder" directory will crash.

Rename "Subdirectory2(ParenthesisTest)" to "Subdirectory2_ParenthesisTest" and you can navigate to the ParentFolder directory without any issue.

This seems to affect only the directory/folder names and not the files.

Hope this helps,
Yan

Hey!

can you still reproduce the problem with the 3.0.1 release we published tonight?
