Multiple Stories/Files Per Episode

I have shows with multiple 15 minute stories per 30 minute episode. For whatever reason, when I digitized these, I split them into 2 files. When I transfer them to my kid's iPad, only 1 of the 2 shows up in VLC. Is there a way to rename these where VLC will recognize them as 2 parts of the same episode, or will I have to re-encode them as a single file?
