iPAD with MKV 480p

MKV movies H264 and 480P will not play on iPad or iPhone with VLC. The issue seems to be with the resolution. All other resolutions with the same format, including 1080p play with no issues. Movies are loaded on iPad and when trying to play a movie with 480p, there is a blip and then VLC returns to the movie list. Has anyone seen this problem before? Know how to get around it?
iPad Air 2, IOS 10.3.3 (same issue with other prior versions) VLC for IOS 2.7.8 I ripped the same movie to H265 which resulted in less than 1GB movie and it will play without issues. Using DVDFab 10.0.3.9
