iPad playing m4a files from FreeBSD ftp server

I can connect via the app to the server and go to the files but when I click on the files nothing happens. When I click on the download button I get a no such file or directory error. If I hit the skip button once I have already clicked on one file and in full screen mode it says my input can't be opened and mentions an Mrl link to my file. I turned off my firewall and that didn't do anything. I am running iOS 9.3.4 and FreeBSD 10.3. Any ideas?
